Hiking - Huerquehue NP

The small but beautiful Huerquehue National Park is easily accessible by public transport and car. There are ancient Araucaria (Monkeypuzzle tree) forests and several lakes, some of them well hidden and inaccessible. The dayhike up to the three lagoons Chico, Verde and Toro is a "must-do" for every reasonably fit hiker.

Route description

200 m past the Conaf office there's a car park with a tiny exhibition room and toilets. Passing Refugio Tinquilco the trail starts to climb. On the way to the top there are two waterfalls and two lookout points with views towards Lake Tinquilco and the Volcano Villarrica. After approx. 2 hours we reach the top, and shortly after Lago Chico, the first of three lakes. The best picnic spot is on the shores of Lake Verde. Lake Toro has superb views, but the beach is muddy and less sunny. The way back is the same as when climbing.

Getting there

Buses JAC has a daily service to the park entrance, leaving at 08.30 from Pucón. To be there on time, you should leave La Torre Suiza at 07.30. The bus back from the park leaves at 17.30, you'll be back in Villarrica around 19.00.
